CHAPTER

FOURTEEN

Oaklyn

“Dr. Schmidt, do you have a few minutes?”

I look up and find Dr. Muhammad standing in the doorway of the treatment room I just finished up in. The patient is gone, having received five stitches in his leg, thanks to catching it on a piece of metal at work and slicing through his jeans and skin. I’m wrapping up my notes in his chart and cleaning up the room when the knock sounds on the door.

“Yes, of course. I’ll be right there.”

He nods, turning down the hall that leads to the physician offices. My heart is beating a little faster as I exit the charting program I was logged into and close the lid on the laptop. I really hope there isn’t an issue. Of all the departments, of all the places I’ve had the privilege to work and learn at, this has been my favorite and I’ve only been here a few weeks. After all, it’s one of the top primary care clinics in the city, but it’s more than that. A facility like this is exactly where I hope to land when my residency is up. To learn under these five physicians is a dream, and I hope I haven’t done something to warrant them renegotiating the terms of my contract with this group. The plan is for me to work the remainder of my time here, and I hope that’s still the case.

As I reach Dr. Muhammad’s office, I rap my knuckles lightly on the open door and poke my head in. He looks up and smiles. “Come in, Oaklyn. Have a seat.”

I do as instructed, hoping he can’t see the nervous bounce of my legs as I position myself on the chair. “What can I do for you, Dr. Muhammad.”

His smile is kind and doesn’t show any indication of something bad coming my way within the next few moments. “The others and I had a meeting at lunch today,” he starts, referring to the other four physicians who make up this medical practice. I know this because I saw it on their schedule and was told they do it once a month to discuss any practice or employee issues. “Your name came up several times.”

“Oh?” I force myself not to fidget with my hands, holding them perfectly still on my lap.

“Yes. You’re here for the final year of your residency, with the intention of going into general family medicine when you’ve completed your term. Is that still the case?”

I nod instantly. “It is.”

He offers me a polite smile. “That’s good. It takes the right person to go into medicine, and from what we’ve seen in just a few short weeks, you check all of the boxes. You’re incredibly smart, empathetic, and willing to listen. The patients love you, and I’m not just talking about the ones you’ve seen here. The reports from the attending physicians at the hospital all have wonderful things to say about you, and we’re honored to have you with us for the next year.
